      Date: 1939 -

Description: Cylindrical black painted steel aerodrome runway light flare that burns kerosene. Hinged steel cube on top houses wick. Base is a sealed unit with no obvious way of filling it. Metal ring handle. Galvanised metal tray underneath to catch spillage of kerosene. This type of kerosene light was used during the Second World War by the RAAF and VDC. The Department of Civil Aviation took them over after the war and used them for oulining the Whitemark runways until 1979 after which battery operated lights were used.
