Description: A group of men women and children outside the post office at Smithton, Tasmania. Two gents with push bikes. From 1877 privately operated postal agencies existed in Smithton until this Commonwealth Government post office at the corner of Smith and Nelson Streets was opened in June 1914. This original weather board building was eventually replaced in the 1960s by a brick building.
