Description: This structure is situated on the corner of William and King Streets in Westbury, Tasmania. The timber baker's shop and the two storey brick residence were built in the 1850's. A large timber bakery was constructed to the west of the main buildings. In the 1890's, the business was owned by Mr. Isaac James and operated by Mr.Thomas Harding. By the turn of the century the owner's brother Mr.Harry James had taken control of the bakery. Pictured in this image in that era are, from left to right, Mrs.William James, Laura James (Mrs. W. Gray), Mrs. Harry James, Mr. William James, and Mr. Harry James. An acetylene gas powered street lantern and a section of bluestone footpath kerbing are also visible. The top storey of the baker's residence was removed in the 1930's by a local builder named Mr. Don Herbert. In latter years, Mr. Edward Scott, Mr. Ron Dawson and Mr. William Hamilton were the proprietors of this business before it closed in the early 1970's. In recent times "Clarke's Antiques and Colonial Accommodation" managed by Mr. & Mrs. Colin Clarke operated from this address. Today the former baker's buildings are used for tourist accommodation.
