Description: This dwelling is situated at 66 William Street Westbury, Tasmania. The home was built in 1839 for Dr. Marcus R. Loane who was appointed to the District Assistant Surgeon's position at Westbury in October 1834. The Loane family had lived at No. 3 Lonsdale Promenade in the village for five years prior to moving to the new house. It was in this era that the Loane family members were held captive and robbed by two bushrangers named Dalton and Kelly. Dr. Loane purchased several small blocks of land at this time also. A front window was replaced with a larger one in the southern end of High Gate House so the doctor could gain extra light for his medical procedures. The original window was placed back in the wall at a later date. Dr. Loane resigned from the government position in 1843 and left the Westbury district. In 1978 the building was sold to new owners who immediately set about restoring the structure. The skylights in the roof were replaced with dormer windows and a new wing of similar character was added at the rear. The photograph of this National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) home was taken in 1992 from the north-eastern direction.
