It began its existence as a two-room farm labourers cottage in the township of Whitemore. After several owners, but only two coats of paint, it became surplus to requirements in 1994 and the decision was made to either demolish it or sell it for removal. About the same time, Ruth and Colin Clarke had been looking for a cottage on site at their property in William Street, Westbury, to expand their Colonial Accommodation enterprise. These two factors got together and the moving of a substantial part of the cottage, intact, from Whitemore to Westbury took place in October 1994. Ruth and Colin decided to return the two main rooms of the cottage to a habitable form without too many concessions to modern ideas of comfort and amenity. Materials salvaged from the Launceston Railway Yards and the Bracknell Uniting Church Hall were used in the reconstruction of the two rooms at the rear of the building. In 1997, Gingerbread Cottage was awarded "Best in Tasmania for Cultural/Heritage conservation" in the tidy Towns Scheme. The photograph was taken from the eastern direction in May 2003.
