      Description: Born in Sydney in 1803, William Chamberlain became a cabin boy on an English whaler when he was 8. The vessel was captured in the English Channel by a French privateer but next day HMS LEANDER captured the privateer. William joined LEANDER but soon after was wounded in the bombardment of Algiers and taken to Scotland by LEANDER's surgeon.
