Description: The Glenore School and Residence was situated on the Black Hills Road in the Glenore district, south-east of the Westbury Township in Tasmania. The Primary school was erected in 1864 for the sum of 300 Pounds on two acres of land under the instructions of the will of the Late Mrs. Jane Bryan. Mr. and Mrs. William Bryan were pioneer landowners in the area who had originally arrived in Van Diemen's Land from Ireland on the ship, The Ardent, in May 1824. The building was officially opened by Sir Richard Dry on the 1st. of March 1864. Mr. Charles Johnson was appointed the first Headmaster. The 50 Pound per annum Headmaster's fee and the 10 Pounds per annum building maintenance costs were provided from the rental of the 260 acre adjoining Bryan Family farm. In 1914 the Tasmanian Education Department assumed responsibiliy for the school and provided a salary for the teacher. The house of learning was condemned in 1926 and a replacement structure was built close by. The original building was demolished in the 1960's. The School's inscribed marble plaque which described Mrs. Bryan's generosity and had orginally been placed in the school wall during the construction was at this time transported to the nearby Whitemore School. Young members of the Hingston Family are visible standing in the foreground of this image. The photograph was taken from the southern direction in the 1960's.
